FINDING THE ABSTRACT: COLOUR, PATTERN AND COLLAGE

Working in watercolour and compatible mixed media, experiment with different degrees of the abstract to find what works best for you on the continuum between realism (the figurative) and pure abstraction (no recognisable subject matter). You’ll be looking at examples from artists including J.M.W. Turner, Matisse, Keith Vaughan, and Richard Diebenkorn for ideas about finding abstract shape, pattern, colour and composition. And guided exercises will enable you to find the abstract within the architecture of Darley House and built and natural environments around us.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Arrive from 11.30 on the Monday for 1pm lunch. Departures at 3pm on the Thursday afternoon.

  • Time and space to immerse yourself in painting, free of everyday pressures, with Ella’s experienced and generous tutorial input, support and feedback.

  • Elegant, gracious, warm and light Georgian house, historic gardens, and Peak District landscapes. Beautifully appointed rooms, and a large, dedicated studio.

  • Option 1: treat yourself to a full-board luxurious residential stay, with all meals prepared by our professional chef.

  • Option 2: a non-residential place including all lunches and afternoon teas, and optional fine dining with the group in the house in the evening.

  • Lots of painting time. The studio is typically in use from 9am to 7.30pm, including teaching slots and an untutored early evening painting session.

  • A friendly and constructive atmosphere for painters of all levels.

  • Short demonstrations, structured exercises, information about principles and processes of drawing and painting, experimentation and independent painting.

  • Individual tutor support, feedback and dialogue, relevant to your aims and experience.

  • Professional quality paint, paper and other materials provided. You'll receive a list of any other equipment to bring with you.

  • Optional extra: a limited number of private tutorials are available at £25 per hour.

  • Exquisite flavour combinations form our professional chef, especially our 3-course dinners with wine included. Dietary restrictions catered for if specified in advance.

NON-RESIDENTIAL PLACES £330

Book now with £100 deposit. £230 balance due 9th August 2019. This includes 4 lunches, 3 afternoon teas, other refreshments, art materials and equipment, and full use of studio and all facilities from 9am to 7.30pm. Optional 3-course dinners including wine with the group in the house are available at £28 per evening.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS 2019

  • Deposits are non-refundable in all cases, unless you cancel within 14 days of payment.

  • Balances are not refunded in full or in part because these courses are date-specific services/leisure activities, like theatre tickets. You may find someone to take your place if you are unable to attend, provided you inform Ella in advance.

  • All bedrooms are upstairs on the first floor. There is no lift.

  • Smoking is not permitted in the house or near windows.

  • Booking and attending an art retreat is entirely at your own risk. Ella Clocksin and Darley House do everything possible to ensure a safe experience for everyone, and accept no liability for loss, damage, personal accident or injury arising.

  • In the unlikely event of a retreat being cancelled in circumstances beyond our control, 100% of fees paid would be refunded with no further liability.

BOOKING RESIDENTIAL PLACES

£200 deposit books the room whether or not you have a room-mate. Each room sleeps one or two. If sharing, the deposit is, in effect, £100 each.

Solo/shared occupancy is specified during checkout.

Lead booker: if room-sharing, one of you must handle the booking and payments for you both. Leave the quantity counter at ‘1’ (i.e. you’re booking 1 room, even though there are 2 of you).

All-inclusive fees are per person not per room, and include accommodation, art course, and art equipment. Full-board (3 meals) catering by our professional chef includes breakfasts cooked to order and 3-course dinners with wine.
