The River Derwent, 10 minutes walk away, will be useful as a prompt to gestural drawing and painting.

Explore how to let rip in watercolour by gaining control of the medium with Ella’s unique insights into handling watercolour, and finding your own mark-making rhythm in gestural work. You’ll  explore various processes of working from Dales landscapes, the gardens, and the nearby River Derwent, and translating drawings into energetic planes of transparent watercolour on various different paper formats and scales. We’ll consider examples by artists Ivon Hitchens, Peter Lanyon, Joan Mitchell and Alf Löhr.

Treat yourself to an immersive painting retreat, based in a luxurious and recently restored private Georgian house. Stay on-site, in one of the beautifully appointed rooms, enjoying exquisite food by Master Chef Charlie Ratcliffe. Or there are several places for non-resident painters.

Working in series: abstract watercolour, composition, collage and mixed media

The striking autumnal gardens at Darley House offer many ways in to drawing and painting.

The striking autumnal gardens at Darley House offer many ways in to drawing and painting.

Learn processes for developing a coherent and connected series of paintings. Artists have always worked in series, to enable focused and sustained exploration of an idea, motif, colour or subject (e.g. buildings and architecture, trees, figures, plants, a subject in different lights). Discover a process of researching, editing and developing your work, where seeds found in one work inform the next piece. A range of watercolour and mixed media experiments will facilitate the process. We’ll look at examples from artists including Richard Diebenkorn and Ellsworth Kelly and his little-known works on paper.

It's still warm enough to work outside at this time of year.

Colour & structure: abstract watercolour landscape & architecture. Derbyshire painting course.

Fully booked

Late autumn gardens, Dales landscapes, and Georgian and village architecture, will inform your investigation of subtle and nuanced colour work and powerfully structured abstract composition.

We’ll be working in watercolour and gouache, referencing ideas from various 20th Century artists, including Keith Vaughan and Richard Diebenkorn.

Treat yourself to a full-board, chef-catered, residential place at Darley House, in Darley Dale, near Matlock in Derbyshire. It's an opportunity to take your work to the next level. This immersive art retreat gives you chance to develop and consolidate your painting, away from everyday pressures.

The art course part of the retreat - including all studio materials and equipment - is a flat rate of £200 per painter. The total cost is arrived at by adding on a proportion of the  cost of house hire, meals and accommodation. For non-resident painters, this is an additional £120. For painters staying on site, this is priced on a sliding scale, with a choice of ensuite or standard room, and single or shared occupancy. Please contact Ella for availability of rooms.

Paint the garden from layered transparent drawings (sold out)

A watercolour class that begins with drawing. By drawing freely on translucent paper, working from one drawing to the next, you'll be able to combine and adjust different garden drawings into new compositions. You'll then be painting from these composite drawings, to make some finished watercolours by the end of the day.

  • This workshop is now fully booked. Please ask, if you'd like to be on the waiting list.

Loosening up: gestural watercolour landscape (sold out)

Big brushes, lots of paint, and bold gestural mark-making will encourage you to see the bigger picture rather than detail, building your confidence to loosen up your work and paint in big sweeps of watercolour. You'll be encouraged to paint in your own style, though we will also reference the work of 20th Century abstract painters, including Ivon Hitchens and later abstract expressionists.

**Please note: this is an advanced class. If it's your first time with me, or you have been to a few of my classes but aren't yet confident about rapidly setting up a palette of mixed colours, or you are a bit rusty, please also book one of the Making Watercolour Glow classes, on Wednesday 28th June or Saturday 12th August.

**We won’t spend time on the foundational techniques I teach, which underpin being able to let rip in gestural watercolour. Without some familiarity with my materials and methods, this class will not be suitable for you.

  • This workshop is now fully booked. Please ask, if you'd like to be on the waiting list.

Making watercolour glow (sold out)

Making watercolour glow (sold out)

Learn or revisit vital watercolour techniques to make strong, rich colours and smooth, glowing planes of transparent paint. Learn rarely described techniques for applying and removing watercolour (differently to oil or acrylic) to avoid typical watercolour frustrations, and how to avoid stripy or blotchy washes and the 5 causes of ‘mud.’

This class is foundational to getting the balance between control and freedom in watercolour painting. It is particularly suitable for beginners and if you are new to my classes. However, it is also appropriate and useful for experienced painters who can’t always get watercolour to behave and want to build a stronger foundation for the medium.

  • This workshop is now fully booked. Please ask, if you'd like to be on the waiting list.
