Observation to Abstraction 2016 - 17

Saturday group 1, workshop 3. FULLY BOOKED.

Experimental drawing and painting in watercolour. Monthly art course in Oxford studio.

This year's theme:

Design your paintings with abstract colour and contrast.

This season’s workshops explore how you can use pairs of contrasted visual

elements (e.g., open versus closed shapes, generous versus pinched shapes, positive and negative contrasts) to build your composition. You will learn how to design a visual dynamic for your paintings that works both in close up and from across the room.  The emphasis is on practical information that, once assimilated, can make a real difference to your painting and take it to next level.

Taking a different key colour for each workshop, you’ll also learn to use abstract (non-literal) colour as a design component.  We use still life in the studio during the workshops, but the ideas are applicable to any kind of subject matter afterwards.

The idea is that you choose a day and a group to work with for a term of three workshops, spaced about a month apart. The experience of working on the same issues with a supportive peer group, working on some homework in between the workshops, and bringing the homework in for review next time has proved to be very effective in helping people take their work to the next level, wherever you’re starting from.
