Working from the river at Waterperry, bigger brushes, more paint, and bold mark-making will help loosen up your work with directional sweeps of colour. With reference to Ivon Hitchens’s and Joan Mitchell’s work.

NB: if you’re not familiar with setting up large quantities of watercolour to paint with, it’s recommended that you get up to speed by taking one of the colour courses (6 July, or 16 or 17 August) before this one.

What to expect

* Fun and interesting guided exercises around the workshop theme, and time for more independent work with tutor support and input.

* A friendly atmosphere in mixed experience groups including beginners, rusty returners and experienced artists. You should feel able to work from direct observation (not photos).

* Generous tuition and feedback, relevant to your experience and aims, from professional artist-tutor with over 18 years' experience.

* Typically, we start the day in the studio, work outside in the grounds in the morning, and develop paintings back at the studio in the afternoon.

* Plenty to inspire: clipped yew, formal and informal plantings, Palladian, ecclesiastical and vernacular architecture, nursery beds and the massed garden centre plants, agricultural implements, water features and the River Thame, and views of Chiltern hills and farmland.

* The price includes paint, paper, boards, brushes etc and hot drinks, but you'll need to bring your own lunch or use the café on site. A list of other things to bring will be provided nearer the time.
