Ella Clocksin (2023) The Ridings 3. Watercolour, graphite, crayon, framed 58.7 x 71.7 x 3 cm
The Ridings 3 looks into a tunnel of sunlit leaves from a road of the same name, on the wooded south-west slopes of Shotover Hill, just outside Oxford.
On Shotover, I can’t not be aware of its ancient tracks, Neolithic burial mound, Bronze Age arrowheads, the Roman road to London, 18C highwaymen hidden in the densely wooded slopes, and residual ochre mines. These vestigial histories are part of the layering of place memory and the emergence of the painting.
