Rafters Remember Being Trees, 2022
Artist residency at The Old Lock Up Gallery, Cromford
Do roof beams remember where they came from?
The Old Lock Up Gallery was once the 18C town lock-up, close to Arkwright’s Cromford Mills in the Industrial Revolution. The gallery, which was my studio for a week, is over the cells, with their trap doors still visible in the floorboards above. The poetry of the rafters’ shapes and the resonance of the former lives of trees and residents there informed the work.
